Top things to do in Ha Long Bay
Updated: Sep 23
When people think of Ha Long Bay, the first thing that usually comes to mind is a boat sailing between limestone islands. But once you are here, there are quite a few ways to enjoy the bay beyond just looking at the scenery. You can paddle into small lagoons, walk through caves, climb to a viewpoint, see how fishing communities live on the water or simply sit on the deck with a good view. Here are some experiences I would recommend for a first trip.
Kayaking through caves and lagoons
If you want to get closer to the limestone islands, kayaking is a great choice. You can paddle into small lagoons, pass between the cliffs and, on some routes, go through low water-level caves that larger boats cannot enter.

Luon Cave is one of the better-known spots for this. Some cruises also visit Dark and Light Cave. You do not need to be an experienced kayaker, and if you would rather not paddle, a traditional bamboo boat is usually available instead.
Exploring Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay
If you are staying on a longer cruise, you may have the chance to go beyond the more familiar routes of central Ha Long Bay. Some itineraries continue towards Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay, where you can enjoy more time on the water and take part in activities such as kayaking or swimming. The experience is a little different depending on the route, so I would check the cruise itinerary rather than choosing a boat just because it says it visits one of these bays.

Visiting a floating fishing village
Before tourism became such a big part of Ha Long Bay, fishing was an important part of life here. Some cruise itineraries still include visits to former floating fishing communities, where you can see fishing boats, floating houses and fish farms

Cua Van Fishing Village is one of the names you may come across. A short traditional boat ride around the area is a nice way to see a side of Ha Long Bay that you would miss from a large cruise ship.
Climbing Ti Top Island
Ti Top Island is a popular stop for a reason. There is a small beach at the bottom and a staircase leading up to a viewpoint with a wide view across the bay. The climb is not very long, but there are quite a few steps, so take your time. If it is a hot day, I would go up first and save the swimming for afterwards. The beach is small, but it is a nice place to cool down when the weather is right.

Exploring Sung Sot Cave
Sung Sot, or Surprise Cave, is probably the cave you will hear about most when planning a Ha Long Bay cruise. You walk up from the boat and then follow a path through several large chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is bigger than it looks from the entrance, which is where the name "Surprise Cave" comes from. Wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking up and down stairs before and during the visit.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Ha Long Bay on a day trip?
Yes. A day cruise can take you to several of the main sights and activities. An overnight cruise simply gives you more time to enjoy the bay at a slower pace.
Do I need kayaking experience?
Not usually. Cruise kayaking routes are generally suitable for beginners when the weather is good, and you can normally choose a bamboo boat instead.
Do all cruises visit Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island?
No. Routes vary between cruises, so check the itinerary if you have specific places you want to visit.
Can I swim in Ha Long Bay?
Some cruises include a swimming stop, usually when the weather and water conditions are suitable. Ti Top Island is one of the most common places for swimming.
What should I bring for these activities?
Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. For kayaking or swimming, it is useful to have swimwear and a change of clothes.
Is Ha Long Bay suitable for older travelers?
Yes, but some activities involve stairs or physical effort. Cruising, enjoying the deck and taking a bamboo boat are good options if you prefer a more relaxed day.
Our recommendation
For a first visit, I would keep things simple: take a cruise, explore one cave, try kayaking or a bamboo boat, and visit Ti Top Island if your itinerary includes it. And don't feel that you have to join every activity. One of the nicest parts of Ha Long Bay is simply having time to sit outside, watch the limestone islands go by and enjoy the trip at your own pace.
