Lan Ha Bay: Vietnam’s Hidden Paradise

If you are planning to visit Ha Long Bay but prefer a route with more time for kayaking, swimming and exploring around Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay is worth considering.

Located next to Ha Long Bay and surrounding much of Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay has the same limestone scenery but offers a different travel experience. Most visitors explore it by day boat or overnight cruise, often with stops for kayaking, swimming or visiting local communities.

I would recommend Lan Ha Bay if you enjoy being active on the water and want to combine a cruise with time on Cat Ba Island. You do not need to choose it simply because it is “quieter”; the route and activities included in your cruise are often more important than the name of the bay.

How do you get to Lan Ha Bay?

Lan Ha Bay is usually reached through Cat Ba Island or a cruise departure point in the Ha Long area.

From Hanoi, you can travel by:

  • A shuttle bus with a ferry or speedboat connection

  • A private car

  • A transfer included with your cruise

The journey often takes around 2.5-3.5 hours, depending on your route, traffic and transfer arrangements.

Before booking, check these details:

  1. Where does the cruise depart from?

Some cruises use ports in the Ha Long area, while others connect through Cat Ba.

  2. Is the transfer included?

A cruise price may not include transport from Hanoi.

  3. Which activities are included?

Kayaking, swimming, cycling and village visits vary by itinerary.

  4. How much time is spent on the boat?

Some programmes include more activities on land, while others focus mainly on the bay.

Lan Ha Bay or Ha Long Bay: Which should you choose?

Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay share similar limestone landscapes, but the way you experience them can be different.

  • Choose Lan Ha Bay if you want to combine a cruise with kayaking, swimming or time on Cat Ba Island.

  • Choose Ha Long Bay if you want the widest range of cruise options, a more direct departure from the main ports or a classic first-time cruise experience.

If you have enough time, you may not need to choose only one. Some itineraries travel through parts of both areas, although the exact route depends on the cruise operator and current regulations.

What can you do in Lan Ha Bay?

Most experiences take place on the water, so your itinerary will usually depend on the cruise or boat trip you choose.

1. Kayak through calm areas

Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore parts of the bay that larger boats cannot reach. Depending on the route and weather, you may paddle through small lagoons, around limestone islands or near quiet coves.

2. Swim and relax

Some cruises stop at suitable areas for swimming. Conditions can change with the weather, tides and the season, so swimming stops are not always guaranteed.

3. Visit local communities

Some itineraries include areas connected to fishing communities, where you can learn more about life on the water. The experience varies by route, so check the programme before booking if this is important to you.

4. Explore Cat Ba Island

Many Lan Ha Bay itineraries include time on Cat Ba Island. Depending on the tour, you may cycle through Viet Hai Village, visit local areas or spend extra time on the island before or after your cruise.

5. Stay overnight on a cruise

An overnight cruise gives you more time to enjoy the bay without rushing back to shore. You can experience the scenery at different times of day and join activities such as kayaking, cooking demonstrations or morning exercise, depending on the cruise.

How long should you spend in Lan Ha Bay?

The best length depends on your schedule and how much time you want to spend on the water.

2 days, 1 night

3 days, 2 nights

More time for kayaking, Cat Ba Island and a slower schedule

For most travelers, I would recommend 2 days and 1 night. It gives you enough time to enjoy the scenery and join a few activities without making the trip feel rushed.

A day trip can work if your schedule is limited, while a 3-day cruise is better if you want more time on the water or plan to explore Cat Ba Island.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Is Lan Ha Bay worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you want to combine a cruise with kayaking, swimming or time on Cat Ba Island.

  1. Is Lan Ha Bay less crowded than Ha Long Bay?

Some routes may have fewer boats, but this can change by season, time of day and cruise itinerary. It is better to compare specific routes rather than choose based only on the idea that one bay is always quieter.

  1. Can I visit Lan Ha Bay on a day trip?

Yes, but you will have less time for activities. An overnight cruise gives you a more relaxed experience.

  1. Is Lan Ha Bay suitable for families?

Yes. Many cruises offer activities suitable for families, but you should check the itinerary, cabin setup and activity requirements before booking.

  1. Can I visit Cat Ba Island during a Lan Ha Bay cruise?

Some cruises include activities on Cat Ba Island, such as cycling to Viet Hai Village. This is not included on every route, so check the itinerary in advance.
