From Sapa to Halong Bay: The Best of Northern Vietnam
Updated: Sep 28
Sapa and Ha Long Bay give you two very different sides of northern Vietnam. In Sapa, you have mountain views, rice terraces and ethnic villages. In Ha Long Bay, the landscape changes completely, with limestone islands rising from the sea.
If you are planning to visit both, the main thing to know is that the journey between them takes most of a day. Here is how to plan the route, what you can do in Sapa before leaving, and how to make sure you arrive in Ha Long in time for your cruise.
What to do in Sapa before heading to Ha Long Bay
If you have a couple of days in Sapa, there is more to do than simply walk around the town. These are some of the experiences worth adding before continuing to Ha Long Bay.
Trek through Muong Hoa Valley
Muong Hoa Valley is one of the best places to see Sapa's famous terraced rice fields. You can follow walking trails through villages such as Lao Chai and Ta Van, passing rice terraces, streams and homes along the valley.
You do not necessarily need a difficult trek. A half-day walk with a local guide is enough to see the landscape and learn more about the communities living here. The scenery changes with the seasons, from flooded terraces to green rice and golden fields.

Visit Cat Cat Village
Cat Cat Village is one of the easiest villages to visit from Sapa town, making it a practical choice if you only have a short time. You can walk through the village, see traditional H'Mong houses and handicrafts, and continue down towards the waterfall and stream.
It is also one of the more touristy villages around Sapa, so I would go earlier in the day if you prefer a quieter walk.

Take the cable car to Fansipan
At 3,143 metres, Fansipan is the highest mountain in Vietnam. You no longer need a multi-day trek to reach the summit. The cable car takes around 15 minutes from the station, followed by a walk or mountain train towards the summit area.
The experience depends heavily on the weather. On a clear day, you can see across the Hoang Lien Son mountains, while clouds can sometimes cover much of the view. If Fansipan is important to you, leave enough flexibility in your Sapa schedule in case the weather changes.
How far is Sapa from Ha Long Bay?
Sapa is roughly 365–450 km from Ha Long Bay, depending on the route. By road, the journey usually takes around 8–9 hours. There is no direct train or flight from Sapa to Ha Long. The nearest railway station is in Lao Cai, about 35 km from Sapa, so train travel requires going via Lao Cai and Hanoi. For most travelers, going directly by road is the simplest option.

How to travel from Sapa to Ha Long Bay
By direct bus
A direct sleeper or cabin bus is the easiest option for most independent travelers. The journey takes around 8–9 hours, with daytime and evening departures available.
If you are catching a cruise the next morning, an evening or night bus can be a practical choice. Check the drop-off point when booking, as some buses stop in Bai Chay or central Ha Long rather than directly at the cruise port.
By private car
A private car gives you more flexibility with departure time and hotel pickup. It is particularly convenient for families, couples or small groups, especially with several pieces of luggage.
Via Lao Cai and Hanoi
You can travel from Sapa to Lao Cai, take a train to Hanoi, then continue to Ha Long. This takes longer than going directly by road, so it makes more sense if you also want to spend time in Hanoi.
If you are catching a Ha Long Bay cruise
Most overnight cruises require check-in around late morning to midday, so leaving Sapa in the morning is usually too late for a same-day cruise. An overnight bus is a more practical option if you want to board the following morning. Also check your cruise's exact departure port, as cruises may leave from Tuan Chau or Ha Long International Cruise Port.
If your schedule is tight, leave some extra time for traffic and other delays rather than arriving just before check-in.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct train from Sapa to Ha Long Bay?
No. You would need to travel from Sapa to Lao Cai, take a train to Hanoi, then continue to Ha Long by road.
Can I travel from Sapa to Ha Long Bay on the same day as my cruise?
Yes, but you need to plan carefully. An overnight bus can arrive in the morning, while a normal daytime departure from Sapa will generally arrive too late for a late-morning cruise check-in.
Is the bus or private car better?
A bus is usually the simpler budget option. A private car gives you more flexibility and is more convenient for families or groups.
How many days should I spend in Sapa?
Two to three days is a good starting point. This gives you time for a village or trekking experience, some time around town and enough flexibility for the weather.
When is the best time to visit Sapa and Ha Long Bay together?
For Sapa, September and October are popular for seeing the rice terraces, while April and May usually offer pleasant conditions for exploring the mountains. Ha Long Bay has a different coastal climate, so fog, rain or rough seas can sometimes affect visibility and cruise activities.
How many days should I spend in Sapa and Ha Long Bay?
If your itinerary allows, I would give 2–3 days to Sapa and 1–2 nights to Ha Long Bay. This gives you enough time to enjoy both destinations without making the transfer feel rushed.
Can I visit Fansipan and Muong Hoa Valley on the same day?
Yes, but it can make for a fairly full day. If you want to trek in Muong Hoa rather than just visit a viewpoint, giving each experience more time is more comfortable.
