The journey to this geological wonder is not just a means to an end; it’s an integral part of the experience, offering stunning views and a taste of the natural beauty that defines this region.

Transportation options

To reach the cave, you have a couple of convenient choices. From Halong City, head down Hai Quan Street for approximately 4 kilometers to arrive at Bai Chay Tourist Wharf. Here’s how to proceed:

  • By Canoe: If you’re short on time and want a quick ride, hiring a canoe is an excellent choice. This option is particularly appealing for small groups, as it allows for a more private and faster journey. Expect to pay around 1,200,000 VND per hour. Plus, zipping across the water can make you feel like an adventurer navigating the bay's wonders!

  • By Boat: For a more leisurely experience, consider joining a boat tour. This option typically costs about 200,000 VND and is a fantastic way to soak in the breathtaking views of Ha Long Bay. As you cruise along, you can relax and enjoy the surrounding limestone karsts and emerald waters, making the journey feel like part of the adventure.

The legend of Sung Sot Cave

Like many attractions in Vietnam, Sung Sot Cave is rich in folklore. According to local legend, this enchanting cave was the site where Thanh Giong, a revered hero, soared into the sky after defeating invaders. As you explore the cave, keep an eye out for stalactites that are said to resemble the horse and sword he left behind, symbols of his bravery.

Additionally, the small ponds within the cave are thought to echo the legendary footsteps of Thanh Giong’s horse, adding a mystical layer to your visit. This blend of natural beauty and rich cultural history makes Sung Sot Cave not just a destination but a journey through Vietnam’s vibrant storytelling tradition.
