The natural beauty of Bai Tho Mountain

If you're looking for a different way to see Ha Long Bay, Bai Tho Mountain offers something a cruise can't: a view from above. From the top, you'll see Ha Long City, the coastline, and limestone islands scattered across the emerald water. But is the climb worth the effort?

Here's what you should know before planning your visit.

Why Bai Tho Mountain Is More Than Just a Viewpoint

At first glance, Bai Tho Mountain may look like just another viewpoint. But once you learn a little about its history, the experience becomes much more interesting. The mountain is around 200 metres high and has a strong connection to Vietnamese history and literature. In the 15th century, King Le Thanh Tong left a poem on the mountain during a visit to the northeastern coast. This is where the mountain got its name, “Poem Mountain.”

So when you reach the top, you're not just looking at Ha Long Bay. You're standing in a place that has been part of the area's story for centuries.

What Is the Hike and View Really Like?

The climb starts in the city before gradually becoming greener and quieter. You'll need to walk uphill and deal with some steep and uneven sections, so comfortable shoes are a must.

You don't need to be an experienced hiker, but the climb can still feel tiring, especially on a hot day.

The reward comes when you reach the viewpoint. Below you, Ha Long Bay stretches out with limestone islands, emerald water, and the city coastline in the distance.

When to Visit and How to Prepare

Early morning is a good time to visit if you want cooler temperatures and a more comfortable climb.

Late afternoon can also be a great choice, especially if you want to enjoy softer light and sunset views.

I wouldn't recommend starting the climb in the middle of a hot, sunny day. The heat can make the route feel much harder than it actually is.

Before you go, make sure you:

  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip

  • Bring enough water

  • Check the weather forecast

  • Avoid the hottest part of the day

  • Check current access conditions before visiting

A little preparation can make the climb much more enjoyable.

Is Bai Tho Mountain Worth Visiting?

I would recommend Bai Tho Mountain if you:

  • Enjoy walking and outdoor activities

  • Want a different view of Ha Long Bay

  • Like photography

  • Are interested in Vietnamese history and culture

You may want to skip it if you:

  • Don't enjoy uphill walks

  • Have difficulty with steep or uneven paths

  • Prefer a completely relaxed sightseeing experience

Personally, I think Bai Tho Mountain is worth considering if you want to see Ha Long Bay from a different angle. The climb takes some effort, but that's also what makes reaching the viewpoint feel rewarding. You don't simply arrive at the view — you earn it.
