The area is best known for Ha Long Bay, but there is more to explore around the map, from famous caves and islands to beaches and cruise ports. For first-time visitors, understanding where these places are located can make planning much easier. Some attractions are in Ha Long City, while others can only be reached by boat.

1. Ha Long Bay
Located just offshore from Ha Long City, Ha Long Bay is the destination that gives the region its name. The bay is famous for its emerald-green water and dramatic limestone islands and islets rising from the sea. It is also the main reason most travelers come to this part of Vietnam.
The best way to see Ha Long Bay is by boat. Depending on your cruise route, you may pass limestone formations, visit caves and islands, go kayaking or simply enjoy the scenery from the deck. For a first visit, a day cruise or overnight cruise is usually the easiest way to experience the bay, especially if you want to see several attractions in one trip.
2. Sung Sot Cave
Located on Bo Hon Island inside Ha Long Bay, Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave, is one of the area's most famous natural attractions. To reach the entrance, visitors walk up a short series of steps before entering the cave. Inside, the cave opens into large chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes and sizes.
The cave is a popular stop on many Ha Long Bay cruise routes, so it is easy to combine with other attractions on the bay. If you enjoy natural landscapes and want to see more than just the scenery from the boat, Sung Sot Cave is a worthwhile stop.
3. Ti Top Island
Also located within Ha Long Bay, Ti Top Island is a small but popular stop on many cruise itineraries. The island offers two main experiences. You can climb the steps to the viewpoint for a panoramic view of the surrounding limestone islands, or spend some time at the sandy beach below.
The climb to the viewpoint is short but can be steep in places, especially in hot weather. If you prefer something more relaxed, the beach is an easy place to take a break after exploring the bay. Ti Top Island is normally visited as part of a cruise rather than as an independent trip from Ha Long City.
4. Tuan Chau Island
Just southwest of Ha Long City, Tuan Chau Island is one of the most useful places to know when planning a Ha Long trip. Connected to the mainland by road, Tuan Chau has developed into an important tourism and cruise hub. The island has a marina, hotels, restaurants and other visitor facilities.
Many Ha Long Bay cruises depart from Tuan Chau Marina, so it is important to check your cruise information before heading there. If your hotel is in Ha Long City or Bai Chay, allow enough time to travel to the marina.
5. Bai Chay
Located in Ha Long City on the mainland, Bai Chay is one of the area's main tourist hubs. Bai Chay has hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment options, as well as Bai Chay Beach. It is a convenient place to stay if you want to combine a Ha Long Bay cruise with some time exploring the city.
